Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Isolation—as appealing as it might be—is not always the best answer. It makes sense that the disciples would lock themselves in a room, separating themselves in a room, separating themselves from the authorities and angry mob who recently killed their friend. It makes sense that the disciples would huddle together as a close-knit group in a familiar place. It makes sense that the disciples were afraid. But Jesus came and stood in their midst and they rejoiced. There are certainly times when quarantine or quiet time away from the hustle and bustle is important. These are opportunities to rest, recharge and pray. But community, not isolation, is the answer. As we celebrate the Divine Mercy Sunday, let us remember the prayer that was prayed at the dedication of our church: “Here may the poor find mercy, oppressed attain true freedom, and all people be clothed with the dignity of your children” (from the Order of the Dedication of a Church and an Altar). If we are to embody the mercy that Christ shows us, we must live into this prayer of dedication and make it our continued prayer today. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Imaculado Corazon de Maria,

El aislamiento —por muy atractivo que sea— no siempre es la mejor solución. Tiene sentido que los discípulos se encerraran en una habitación, separándose en una habitación, separándose de las autoridades y de la turba enfurecida que recientemente mató a su amigo. Tiene sentido que los discípulos se agrupen como un grupo unido en un lugar familiar. Tiene sentido que los discípulos tuvieran miedo. Pero Jesús vino y se puso en medio de ellos y se regocijaron. Sin duda, hay momentos en los que la cuarentena o el tiempo de tranquilidad lejos del bullicio son importantes. Estas son oportunidades para descansar, recargar energías y rezar. Pero la comunidad, no el aislamiento, es la respuesta. Al celebrar el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia, recordemos la oración que se rezó en la dedicación de nuestra iglesia: "Aquí que los pobres encuentren misericordia, que los oprimidos alcancen la verdadera libertad y que todas las personas sean vestidas con la dignidad de vuestros hijos" (de la Orden de la Dedicación de una Iglesia y un Altar). Si queremos encarnar la misericordia que Cristo nos muestra, debemos vivir esta oración de dedicación y hacer de ella nuestra oración continua hoy. Inmaculado Corazón de María, ruega por nosotros.
