Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Today, “Laetare Sunday,” breaks the somberness of Lent for a little rejoicing, and the readings all summon us to an awareness of reconciliation. One of the best-loved stories of our tradition is today’s Gospel story of the runaway son and the prodigal father. Prodigal, of course, is an adjective meaning “spendthrift or extravagant to a degree bordering on recklessness,” and although the boy maxes out the credit cards, it is really the father who is prodigal with forgiveness. Part of the excitement of this Laetare Sunday is rooted in the ancient catechumenate. Long ago, midway through Lent, the “elect” were focusing more and more on the gift of reconciliation accomplished for them by Christ and about to be realized in the Easter sacraments they were preparing to celebrate. In some places, the elect were even bedecked with roses on this day. A person bedecked with roses sticks out in a crowd; a person formed by the Eucharist and committed to living a life of reconciliation does, too. That’s you! This week on Tuesday, April 1, there will be no 6:00pm Confessions as we will have a Penance service with ten (10) priests at 7:00pm. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Hoy, «Domingo de Laetare», rompemos con la sombría Cuaresma para alegrarnos un poco, y todas las lecturas nos invitan a tomar conciencia de la reconciliación. Una de las historias más queridas de nuestra tradición es la del Evangelio de hoy sobre el hijo fugitivo y el padre pródigo. Pródigo, por supuesto, es un adjetivo que significa “derrochador o extravagante hasta un grado que raya en la temeridad”, y aunque el muchacho gasta al máximo las tarjetas de crédito, en realidad es el padre quien es pródigo con el perdón. Parte de la emoción de este Domingo Laetare tiene su origen en el antiguo catecumenado. Hace mucho tiempo, a mitad de la Cuaresma, los «elegidos» se centraban cada vez más en el don de la reconciliación que Cristo les había concedido y que estaba a punto de realizarse en los sacramentos de la Pascua que se disponían a celebrar. En algunos lugares, los elegidos incluso se adornaban con rosas en este día. Una persona adornada con rosas destaca entre la multitud; una persona formada por la Eucaristía y comprometida a vivir una vida de reconciliación, también. Ésa eres tú. El martes de esa semana, primero de abril no habran confesiones a las 6:00pm porque tendremos un Servicio de Penitencia con diez sacerdotes a las 7:00pm.
